Iran successfully purchases 6.3M tons of wheat from domestic farmers since April

(MENAFN) According to a senior official from Iran's Agriculture Ministry, the government has successfully purchased 6.3 million tons of wheat from domestic farmers since April, totaling over USD2.22 billion. This initiative is part of a national plan aimed at ensuring the purchase of local wheat production.

Sohrab Sohrabi reported that this year's purchases represent a 10 percent increase compared to the same period last year, when 5.741 million tons were bought. The government has already disbursed approximately USD1.05 billion to farmers, nearly half of the total amount owed.

Khuzestan province in southwestern Iran emerged as the top contributor to wheat supply, delivering 1.62 million tons. It was followed by Golestan, Fars, and Ilam provinces in descending order.

The Agriculture Ministry estimates a total wheat harvest of between 14.5 to 15.5 million tons by the end of the crop year, which is expected to fully meet domestic needs. This reflects a 6 percent increase in wheat production for Iran in 2023, positioning the country as the 14th largest producer of wheat globally, according to the USDA's World Agricultural Production report. Last year, Iranian farmers produced 14 million tons of wheat, an increase of 800,000 tons from the previous year.

Looking ahead, the USDA forecasts that Iran will maintain its wheat production at 14 million tons in 2024, in line with the 2023 output. Despite global wheat production declining by about seven million tons this year to 782 million tons, Iran's production levels have allowed it to surpass several countries in terms of total wheat output, including Brazil and Egypt, underscoring its significant role in the global wheat market despite challenges in global agricultural production.
