Britain Terminates Rwanda Deportation Scheme, Releases Detained Immigrants

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) LONDON, July 7 (KUNA) -- The newly elected British government announced on Sunday its intentions in terminating the Rwanda deportation scheme, conditionally releasing the detained illegal immigrants waiting to be deported to Rwanda.
In a statement, the recently elected British Prime Minister Keir Starmer affirmed the termination of deporting illegal immigrants and asylum seekers from the UK to Rwanda.
According to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), "The two last remaining migrants who are detained and waiting to be sent to Rwanda will be bailed in the coming days, the government has said."
Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the deportation agreement would not deter illegal immigrants, as it would only deport one percent of the people who arrive through fishing boats.
The BBC revealed only 220 illegal immigrants have been detained since April, awaiting to be deported to Rwanda, while the new British government scarcely revealed that more than 52,000 illegal immigrants were set to be deported.
The Rwanda deportation of illegal immigrants scheme was penned by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson in 2021, and supported by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, where an undisclosed number of illegal immigrants were to be deported to Rwanda in exchange of receiving British financial aid.
"They were due to be deported to the east-central African country as part of previous PM Rishi Sunak's policy to tackle illegal immigration," added the BBC.
However, "On his first full day as prime minister, Sir Keir Starmer confirmed the Rwanda deportation scheme is 'dead and buried,'" reported the BBC.
On June 14 2022, the first plane heading to the Rwandan capital Kigali, carrying on board the deported asylum seekers and illegal immigrants was stopped due to lawsuits that reached the British Supreme Court filed by refugees and human rights organizations against the government. (end)
