German automaker, Italian defense firm form joint venture for next-generation defense systems


(MENAFN) Rheinmetall, a leading German land vehicle producer, and Leonardo, an Italian defense firm, have announced a strategic joint venture aimed at developing advanced land defense systems. The agreement, detailed in a joint press release on Wednesday, includes plans to collaborate on the development and commercialization of a new main battle tank (MBT) and the Lynx Platform for the Armoured Infantry Combat System (AICS).

Under the memorandum of understanding (MoU), the 50:50 joint venture will be headquartered in Italy and is set to serve as the lead system integrator and prime contractor for both Italian programs. This partnership marks a significant step towards setting new standards in defense technology, aiming to pioneer a new generation of cutting-edge combat vehicles tailored for European markets.

Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall, expressed ambitions to establish benchmarks and facilitate the adoption of state-of-the-art combat systems across Europe. He highlighted the venture's strategic focus on addressing the modernization needs of both the Italian market and partner countries seeking advanced combat solutions.

Roberto Cingolani, CEO of Leonardo, underscored the collaborative opportunities between the two companies, emphasizing the synergy in technology and industrial capabilities that will drive the development of advanced MBTs and infantry vehicles. Cingolani described the agreement as a pivotal step towards enhancing Europe's defense capabilities and fostering a cohesive European defense framework.

The joint venture also positions itself strategically to contribute to future initiatives such as the European Main Ground Combat System (MGCS), outlining a roadmap for participation in broader defense modernization efforts across the continent.
