Italian Premier strongly criticizes ‘surreal’ backroom deals within EU

(MENAFN) Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has strongly criticized what she describes as "surreal" backroom deals within the European Union to fill top positions, arguing that these decisions ignore the expressed opinions of European voters. Meloni's remarks come in the wake of significant electoral shifts across the bloc, where right-wing parties made substantial gains in the European Parliament elections, particularly in Germany and France.

Reports indicate that despite these electoral outcomes, the three main Political groups in the European Parliament, which are predominantly centrist, have reached an agreement to allocate key European Union leadership roles. According to the reported deal, Ursula von der Leyen of Germany is set to continue as President of the European Commission for a second term. Additionally, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas is slated to replace Spain's Josep Borrell as the new European Union foreign policy chief, while former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa will assume the presidency of the European Council, succeeding Belgium's Charles Michel.

Speaking before the Italian parliament, Meloni expressed disbelief that such significant appointments were made "without even pretending to discuss the signals from voters." She highlighted concerns that Italy, along with other countries, was reportedly sidelined in these negotiations, which were reportedly endorsed by leaders from France, Germany, Spain, Poland, Greece, and the Netherlands.

The finalized names are expected to be presented for approval at an upcoming European Union leaders' meeting in Brussels. Meloni's criticism underscores broader discontent within Italy and beyond regarding the transparency and inclusivity of decision-making processes within the European Union, particularly concerning leadership appointments that shape European policy and direction.
