UK Premier threatens teens with sanctions over declining national service

(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has reaffirmed his commitment to introduce mandatory national service for all United Kingdom teenagers, warning that those who refuse to participate could face significant repercussions. Sunak initially unveiled the proposal last month, arguing that reinstating national service would bolster national unity and offer transformative opportunities for young people.

In an interview with the BBC on Friday, Sunak discussed potential consequences for individuals opting out of the compulsory program, which would encompass all 18-year-olds regardless of gender. He suggested that sanctions could include limitations on access to financial services and driving licenses.

Under the proposed scheme, British youths would be required to either serve full-time in the military for a year or volunteer one weekend per month with community organizations like the police or National Health Service (NHS). The initiative aims to cultivate essential life skills, instill a shared sense of national purpose, and foster pride in the country.

Sunak emphasized that the program would offer participants valuable real-world experience and contribute to building a cohesive society. If the Conservative government retains power, a pilot phase of the national service program is scheduled to commence in September of the following year, with an estimated annual cost of EUR2.5 billion (USD3.19 billion) funded by British taxpayers.

The proposal has sparked debate across the United Kingdom, reviving discussions on the merits of compulsory national service in contemporary society and its potential impact on young people's lives and civic responsibilities.
