Switzerland declares West`s refusal to hosting upcoming Ukraine peace conference

(MENAFN) Following the conclusion of the recent Ukraine peace conference at Switzerland’s Burgenstock Resort, Swiss Ambassador Gabriel Luechinger has disclosed that future discussions aimed at resolving the conflict will not be held in Western countries. Luechinger, a key organizer of the summit, indicated that ongoing consultations with potential hosts are already underway, marking a significant departure from previous Western-centric diplomatic efforts.

The decision comes amidst geopolitical tensions and significant absences from key global players. Prior to the conference, notable nations, including China, opted not to participate, citing concerns over the absence of Russian representation and the perceived futility of discussions in the absence of all key stakeholders. Russia, in a statement earlier this year, had declared its intention to skip the summit, citing objections to what it views as an unrealistic and ultimatum-driven "peace formula" proposed by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

In an interview with Swiss broadcaster SRF, Ambassador Luechinger emphasized the evolving nature of international diplomacy surrounding the Ukraine conflict. "It is clear that the next peace summit will not be held in Europe or the West," he stated, hinting at a shift towards alternative regions for hosting such critical diplomatic engagements. Luechinger disclosed that discussions have already commenced with several nations regarding their potential role in organizing the upcoming summit. "The ball is now in their court to decide," he remarked, suggesting that concrete developments could be expected in the coming weeks.

When asked about the possibility of Saudi Arabia hosting the next meeting, Luechinger hinted at it being a viable option without providing specific details. He reiterated the importance of integrating Russia into the peace process, acknowledging its crucial role in any meaningful resolution to the conflict.

The shift away from Western hosting reflects broader uncertainties in international diplomacy, as stakeholders seek new avenues to facilitate dialogue and negotiations amid persistent geopolitical complexities. As discussions unfold in the coming weeks, the international community remains watchful of developments that could shape the future trajectory of efforts to bring lasting peace to Ukraine.
