UK’s ruling Conservative Party heads for “electoral extinction”

(MENAFN) Recent polls conducted by multiple British media outlets have painted a dire electoral picture for the United Kingdom’s ruling Conservative Party, suggesting they are on course for significant losses in the upcoming elections. According to reports over the weekend, the Conservative Party under Chancellor Rishi Sunak's leadership is experiencing historic levels of unpopularity, with predictions indicating potential electoral disaster.

An Opinium poll featured in The Observer indicated that 40percent of likely voters are leaning towards the Labour Party in the upcoming July 4 elections. In contrast, only 23percent expressed support for the Conservatives, while Nigel Farage's Reform UK party has surged to 14percent, surpassing both the Greens (7percent) and the Liberal Democrats (12percent).

Similarly, a Telegraph poll published on the same day reflected even bleaker prospects for the Conservatives, with Labour maintaining a commanding lead at 46percent compared to the Conservatives’ 21percent. Reform United Kingdom also continued to gain ground with 13percent of voter support. These figures mark the Conservatives’ poorest performance in a Telegraph poll in five years, highlighting a significant shift in electoral sentiment.

A more detailed survey by Survation for the Times projected Labour winning a substantial 456 out of 650 parliamentary seats, while the Conservatives are anticipated to secure a mere 72 seats. This projection represents a stark contrast to the Conservatives’ victory in 2019, where they clinched 365 seats and formed a majority government with an 80-seat margin.

If these predictions hold true, securing only 72 seats would mark the Conservative Party’s worst electoral showing in its 200-year history. Previously, their lowest point dated back to 1906 under Arthur Balfour’s leadership, when they secured 156 seats compared to the Liberal party’s 397. This looming electoral scenario underscores a challenging road ahead for the Conservatives as they approach the upcoming polls amidst widespread dissatisfaction and shifting political dynamics.
