Media reports Russian flags being prohibited from Ukraine game at Euro 2024

(MENAFN) According to a report from the Associated Press on Monday, the Union of European football Associations (UEFA) has initiated measures aimed at preventing the display of Russian flags at the Munich Football Arena during Ukraine’s first European Championship match against Romania on June 17, 2024. A source within UEFA disclosed that security personnel will intercept and remove any Russian flags brought by spectators attempting to enter the venue. The report did not clarify whether individuals carrying Russian flags would be permitted entry into the stadium.

The decision follows previous instances where Russian flags were observed in the stands during matches in the ongoing tournament. During the recent match between Germany and Scotland, footage from the stadium captured the display of the Russian tricolor. Similarly, photos from the match between Serbia and England showed Russian flags among Serbian fans.

The Russian national team has been excluded from UEFA events since the onset of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022. Despite this ban, Russian citizens are allowed to attend UEFA-sanctioned tournaments.

While Euro 2024 stadium regulations do not explicitly prohibit the display of Russian or other national flags, spectators are strictly forbidden from showcasing materials that promote violence, discrimination, racism, xenophobia, political extremism, or religious and political propaganda. Moritz van Dulmen, managing director of Kulturprojekte Berlin, the organizer of the main Euro 2024 fan zone, had previously alerted attendees that only the national colors of participating teams would be permitted within the venue.
