Taipei’s new leader claims that China seeking abolition of Taiwan

(MENAFN) In a solemn address to future military leaders at Taiwan’s premier military academy in Kaohsiung, President Lai Ching-te cautioned against Beijing’s relentless efforts to assert control over the island nation. Lai emphasized the imperative for cadets to comprehend the profound threats posed by China’s mainland forces, underscoring Taiwan’s recognition as a sovereign entity by a minority of global nations amidst Beijing’s steadfast vow to achieve reunification, even by force if necessary.

Lai, who assumed office recently amid escalating tensions with Beijing, described China’s ambition to annex Taiwan and eliminate its status as the Republic of China as a pivotal goal for the Chinese leadership's national rejuvenation. This stance has drawn strong condemnation from Beijing, which has branded Lai as a "dangerous separatist" and subsequently initiated military maneuvers around Taiwan following his inauguration.

Addressing the cadets, Lai stressed the critical importance of Taiwanese self-determination in shaping the island’s future trajectory. He asserted that amid mounting pressure and military exercises from Beijing, Taiwan must steadfastly distinguish between allies and adversaries, rejecting any defeatist attitudes regarding the island’s resilience in the face of potential conflict.

The Taiwanese president’s remarks also highlighted the contentious geopolitical landscape involving Taiwan, with Beijing consistently protesting against Washington’s engagements with Taipei and the provision of military aid, citing breaches of the 'One-China' principle. The escalating rhetoric and military posturing underscore the profound challenges facing Taiwan's sovereignty and security amid ongoing regional tensions.
