COPA American.. Oldest, Prestigious Football Tournament Birthing World Champions

KUWAIT, June 20 (KUNA) -- COPA America is the oldest and one of the most prestigious football tournaments in the world, birthing several world champion teams.
Since 1916, the tournament had seen many regional giants such as Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay topping the winners podium and also those very teams have become won the World Cup numerous times rivaling their counterparts in Europe.
In the first tournament in 1916, four teams -- Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Chile -- played against each other with Uruguay winning the trophy followed by Argentina, Brazil, and Chile.
Argentina and Uruguay won the tournament each 15 times, followed by Brazil with nine, Paraguay, Chile, and Peru with two, in addition to Bolivia and Colombia with one.
The tournament's top scorers are Norberto Mendez (Argentina), Zizinho (Brazil) with 17 goals each, that number might be threatened if Argentine Lionel Messi decided to break it via scoring 5 more goals during his tournament appearance but that remains to be seen.
The COPA America tournament will begin on June 21 and last to July 14 with the event held throughout stadiums in the US. (end)
