(MENAFN- UkrinForm) The United Nations supports all initiatives aimed at establishing a just and lasting peace in Ukraine that are based on the UN Charter, international law and relevant resolutions of the UN General Assembly.
United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo said this at the second plenary meeting of the Global Peace Summit in Switzerland, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.
"The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has maintained a clear and consistent stance: Russia's invasion of Ukraine violates the United Nations Charter and international law and has caused immense suffering to the people of Ukraine," DiCarlo said.
She recalled that UN General Assembly resolutions had supported the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.
"Many voices during this meeting have stressed the need to adhere to the principles of the UN Charter. These principles are as valid today as they were in 1945," DiCarlo said.
According to her, since the start of the war, the UN has worked with the Ukrainian government and civil society to mitigate the war's impact, and is actively involved in areas that are discussed in detail during this summit, such as the human dimension, nuclear and food security.
"At the United Nations, we are ready to support all initiatives for a just, lasting and comprehensive peace in Ukraine that are based on the UN Charter, international law and relevant resolutions of the General Assembly," Dicarlo stressed.
