China implements AI to check cheating as 13.42M students pass college entrance exam
(MENAFN) China witnessed a historic moment as a staggering 13.42 million students took the college entrance exam, known as "gaokao," across the country. This critical test, determining university admissions and shaping students' futures, has reached a record high since its resumption in 1977, according to China's Education Ministry.
Compared to the previous year, an additional 510,000 students participated in this year's exam, making it the largest exam in the world. To maintain the integrity of the gaokao, authorities in Guangdong province have introduced advanced artificial intelligence (AI) systems to detect cheating. These measures include two-step checks using detectors and security machine gates to identify electronic devices, ensuring fairness and transparency in the examination process.
In addition to AI surveillance, intelligent inspection systems have been deployed across exam venues in Guangdong, accompanied by radio signal shielding equipment to prevent unauthorized communication. Furthermore, authorities have implemented measures to minimize disruptions from external sources, such as traffic and construction noise, to create an optimal testing environment for students.
In Beijing, over 100 examination centers have been established to accommodate prospective students, while several provinces have made adjustments to the examination format. Students are required to answer questions in subjects like Chinese, mathematics, and a foreign language, with the option to choose between physics and history. Additionally, they must select from subjects such as ideology and politics, geography, chemistry, and biology, reflecting the comprehensive nature of the gaokao.
Special arrangements have been made for approximately 11,000 students with special needs, including the provision of Braille exam papers, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility in the examination process. As China continues to prioritize the integrity and fairness of the gaokao, the implementation of AI technology underscores the commitment to upholding academic standards and meritocracy in higher education.
