Maersk confronts major delays due to port congestion in Mediterranean, Asia

(MENAFN) The Danish shipping giant Maersk is grappling with severe congestion at ports in the Mediterranean and Asia, leading to substantial delays in its operations. The company announced in a statement that this congestion has forced it to cancel two westbound flights from China and South Korea that were scheduled for early July. This disruption underscores the ongoing challenges within global supply chains, which have been exacerbated by rising costs and recurrent delays. One significant factor contributing to these delays is the series of Houthi attacks on commercial vessels near the Suez Canal, which have led major container transport companies such as Maersk, MSC, and Hapag-Lloyd to reroute their ships around Africa, opting for longer and safer journeys.

Singapore, recognized as the world's second-largest container port, is among the most affected by the current congestion, according to data from Linerlitica. This congestion is not isolated, as similar issues are reported in ports across China, Dubai, Spain, and the United States. Shipping experts have attributed the delays in Chinese ports to adverse weather conditions, including strong winds, which have significantly disrupted the flow of goods.

Linerlitica further explained that the increasing congestion at Singapore and Jebel Ali ports in Dubai is due to a sudden spike in demand for goods, coupled with ongoing disruptions from the rerouting of ships away from the Red Sea. These combined factors have created a challenging environment for global shipping logistics, with far-reaching implications for supply chains worldwide.
