Maersk faces significant delays amid congestion in Mediterranean, Asian port

(MENAFN) On Monday, the Maersk Shipping Group announced it is contending with severe congestion at key ports in the Mediterranean and Asia, which is causing substantial delays in its shipping schedules. Maersk, the second largest container shipping company worldwide, revealed in a statement that due to this congestion, it would be unable to operate two scheduled flights departing from China and South Korea heading westward in early July.

This notice from Maersk arrives at a critical juncture when global supply chains are already suffering from persistent delays and increasing costs. These issues are further aggravated by Houthi attacks on commercial ships near the Suez Canal in Yemen, adding another layer of disruption to the already strained maritime logistics.

In light of these ongoing challenges, leading container shipping companies, including Maersk, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), and Hapag-Lloyd, are taking strategic measures to safeguard their operations. These companies are rerouting their vessels along a longer route around Africa to avoid the high-risk areas and ensure the safety of their ships and cargo. This decision underscores the broader struggles faced by the shipping industry as it navigates geopolitical tensions and logistical bottlenecks, striving to maintain reliable and efficient service amidst a complex global landscape.
