Amman, January 21 (Petra) -- The President of the Supreme Council for Science and Technology, Prince El Hassan bin Talal, discussed Sunday transforming crises and problems into opportunities and achievements and the "revolution" in awareness and global interaction towards the Palestinian cause.
In a visit to the Association of Arab Universities, Prince El Hassan said, "What is happening in the Gaza Strip, where people are deprived of the necessities of life such as water, food, medicine, cooking fuel and sanitation, prompts people to think about an index of the multiple abuses that Palestinians experience, similar to the index of multidimensional deprivation."
He called for establishing a new global humanitarian system to overcome crises and disasters in three forms: "man-made disasters, man against his fellow man and natural disasters through human will."
He talked about the integration and solidarity between the Levant and the Arabian Peninsula to achieve sustainable social and economic development and create an independent knowledge base and research centres in the Levant that would work within the priorities and needs of the region and involve local communities.
He noted the "importance" of determining the priorities of universities and working to find an effective mechanism to help people achieve their goals within the "enormous" potential of the knowledge revolution.
He discussed the role of Arab research institutions in "reshaping the mental and cognitive image of humans."
Prince El Hassan stressed the "need" to transform scientific research into "effective" development projects, adding that the content of education and reducing the gap between scientific research and its practical applications is "key to creating a model of broad participation in various fields."
He discussed activating the idea of a university scientific endowment to enable communities to take a role in development and urged removing barriers to technology innovation.
He called for creating an economic and social council for the Arab Levant region to enhance cooperation, capacity building, empowerment and delegation.
The President of the Royal Scientific Society (RSC), Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, talked about networking and cooperation between Jordanian universities in the fields of scientific research and exchange of experiences.
Princess Sumaya stressed the "importance" of creating research and scientific alliances to provide scientific research.
The Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Science and Technology, Mashhour Rifai, announced the "El Hassan Learning Platform" in honour of the Prince's efforts in higher education and to provide lifelong self-education.
Rifai said the platform would focus on the Arabic language to enrich Arabic content on the Internet, give greater attention to humanities and focus on university courses while offering specialised topics.
He added that the platform would benefit from global experiences and cooperate with the Arab League, the Association of Arab Universities, ESCWA and UNESCO.
