Singapore, Qatar Affirm Commitment To Maintain Regional Peace

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 25 (KUNA) -- Singapore and Qatar on Friday affirmed their mutual commitment to maintaining regional peace and prosperity.
Singapore's foreign ministry, in a statement following the eighth meeting of the senior joint committee, acclaimed Doha's joining of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations' 2022 Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) and its growing engagement in the region.
TAC, worked out in 1976, embodies universal principles of peaceful coexistence and friendly cooperation among States in Southeast Asia. It is a legally-binding code for inter-state relations in the region and beyond.
The ministry statement noted that Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Loong addressed a statement at the commission meeting, adding that the visiting Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad Al-Thani and the first minister and national security coordinator Teo Hean affirmed their countries' commitment to use the commission as a means for expanding partnership.
The two sides applauded the chain of bonds established last year, particularly during the visit by Singapore's President Halimah Yacob to Doha in June 2023. Moreover, they acclaimed the series of memos, inked by two sides yesterday for cooperation in varirealms.
They also agreed on holding the ninth session of the joint committee in Doha at a time they would agree on later -- through diplomatic channels.
On Thursday, Singapore and Qatar inked memoranda of understanding for cooperation in the fields of social development, family education, water, digitization, innovation and commercial partnership.
The memos were signed during the official visit by Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad Al-Thani who took part along with his host, the Singapore Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong, in the signing ceremony.
Sheikh Mohammad Al-Thani has also met President Halimah Yacob at the presidential palace and the prime minister who invited him to a luncheon.
Singapore's ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement that president Halimah and her Qatari guest affirmed keenness on maintaining the warm relations between the two countries, adding that she applauded progress in Qatar's food security and innovation in the aftermath of her visit to the Gulf country in June.
The foreign ministry's statement added that the Qatari prime minister and foreign minister and Singapore's prime minister held talks on boosting cooperation in the fields of energy, commerce, investments and combating extremism.
One of the inked memos deals with promotion of investments and trade, another with facilitating start-ups' access into the two countries' markets, a third with cooperation in water and irrigation, programs for children, women, families and special needs' cases. A fourth one stipulates cooperation for swap of educational curricula. (end)
