(MENAFN- PRLog) -- The 100 Black Men of Houston Class of 2023 hosted the Miles Ahead Scholars Student conference on August 2nd, 2023, at the University of Houston Downtown.
The one-day workshop brought together 50+ college-bound Black and Latino young men with high scholastic aptitude and connected them with an array of professionals from different industries to discuss topics such as professional attire, financial literacy, and mental health awareness.
The conference was designed to uplift and motivate student scholars along their path toward college and beyond. Many of the scholars, who range from freshmen to seniors at Wheatley High School, Worthing Early College High School and Kashmere High School, walked away with knowledge and skills to prepare them as they enter their college careers and beyond.
The conference guest speakers included Tremaine Kwasikpui- Director of Student Leadership and Involvement, UHD, Shaughn Thomas- Owner, Invest in Yourself, Dr. Nikki Coleman- Owner, Dr. Nikki Knows, Everett Hare - Executive Director of Instruction, Alief ISD, and 100BMOH Class of 2023 Candidates Dr. Exley Warren- Miles Ahead Scholars, Wilber Suggs- Attorney and Director, Alliant Group, Leroy Scott- Author and Counselor, Daniel Bertrand, Senior Director, Microsoft Corporation.
The event raised over $10,000 in donations which will assist in funding future 100 Black Men of Houston community events that empower young Black and Latino men to be leaders in their lives, schools, and communities.
"Thank you to the 100 Black Men of Houston for hosting the workshop for our male students of color in the Miles Ahead Scholar program on the topics of financial literacy, professional dress/etiquette, and mental health," expressed Dr. Exley H. Warren, Senior Manager. "By lending your time, treasure, and talent, you helped prepare our students to become agents of change in their classrooms, schools, and communities."
Jarred Morgan, Co-Chair of 100 BMOH Membership and Board Member applauded the group saying, "The students' energy was infectious, and our motto was fully displayed: They'll be what they see.
Many of these would be first-generation college students, so we are talking about real generational impact. Our communities are best served when the underserved get a chance to see themselves beyond their circumstances. I appreciate all who came to give us their time & wisdom; the kids and I won't forget it."
