Republic Of China (Taiwan) Assists Haiti With Flood Relief Efforts

TAIWAN / HAITI – Torrential rain in Haiti over the past few days has led to severe flooding across the country. The Northwest Department and the southern regions have been hit particularly hard, including the capital city of Port-au-Prince.

A press release from The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs, announced:

“ The Republic of China (Taiwan) has spared no effort in assisting Haiti with post-disaster reconstruction. In response to the current flooding, the Taiwan government immediately allocated US$100,000 for disaster relief on the basis of humanitarian concerns and the staunch diplomatic partnership between the two countries. Taiwan also instructed its embassy in Haiti to coordinate disaster relief with the Haitian government so that local people's lives can soon return to normal.”

In recent years, Haiti has been struck by a number of natural disasters, including earthquakes and tropical storms.

“To date, 42 people have died, 85 have been injured, 11 are missing, and 13,633 homes have been flooded. Haitian prime minister Ariel Henry,” said on Twitter.“The government continues to closely monitor the situation and work with international organizations on emergency response measures.”

MOFA noted that they will continue to closely follow developments in Haiti, and advised:

“The embassy in Haiti maintains close contact with Taiwanese businesspeople, overseas compatriots, and technical missions. No Taiwanese nationals have been reported missing or injured.”
