(MENAFN- Newsroom Panama) Ding Liren has become 17th world chess champion – the first from China – defeating Russia's Ian Nepomniachtchi in a tie-breaker. Ding defeated Nepo in the last of the four Rapid tiebreaks.
Aside from claiming the title of world champion, Ding will receive €1.1 million for his victory while Nepomniachtchi will receive €900,000.
On June 6, 2009, at the age of 16, he became the youngest Chinese chess champion in history. In April 2011, he won the Chinese Championship for the second time, and for the third time the following year, at the age of 19. In October 2009, he became the 30th Chinese player in history to win the Grandmaster title.
