(MENAFN) Iran has warned that it will respond quickly to any pretext for an attack on its bases inside Syria, which were established at the request of the Damascus government to fight terrorism. The warning came after U.S. officials claimed that Iran was involved in attacks on U.S. bases inside Syria. The spokesman for Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), Keyvan Khosravi, made the statement, saying that the U.S. is trying to make accusations against Iran by evading the consequences of its illegal Occupation of part of Syrian territory.
On Saturday, more than 20 rockets were reportedly fired against two illegal bases belonging to American occupation forces in eastern Syria. Iran's Arabic-language Al-Alam TV reported that the targets were American outposts based near the al-Omar oilfield and the Koniko gas field in Syria's Dayr al-Zawr Province. The attacks were in response to a strike carried out by U.S. forces against a facility in northeast Syria, following a drone attack on Thursday that killed a U.S. contractor and injured six other Americans.
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said that, at President Joe Biden's direction, he had ordered "precision air strikes... in eastern Syria against facilities used by groups affiliated with Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps." However, Khosravi said that such claims are not true and that Washington is pursuing a blame game policy.
Iran has suffered huge costs in the fight against terrorism and in establishing security in Syria, according to the spokesman. He added that Iran opposes and counters any action that threatens the stability of Syria. The U.S. has played a role in creating and supporting the Daesh terrorist group as a proxy means to pursue its own political objectives in Syria and Iraq, Khosravi said.
The tension between Iran and the U.S. in Syria highlights the ongoing conflict and power struggle in the region. Both sides have been involved in the Syrian conflict, supporting different factions and pursuing their own interests. The recent attacks and warnings suggest that tensions between Iran and the U.S. are unlikely to ease soon. The situation also raises concerns about the potential for further violence and instability in the region, which could have broader implications for global security and stability.
