Trump uses Texas rally to rail against prosecutors investigating him

(MENAFN) Former US President Donald Trump used his first election rally in Waco, Texas, to criticize the prosecutors investigating him, using dark and conspiratorial language to fire up his base ahead of next year's Republican primary elections. Trump described the investigations surrounding him as "something straight out of the Stalinist Russia horror show."

Trump's supporters gathered at Waco's airport, many of whom held signs saying "WITCH HUNT." Trump is being investigated by prosecutors in Manhattan for campaign finance violations and by a special counsel appointed by the Department of Justice for allegations of hoarding top-secret documents and masterminding a plot to overturn the 2020 election.

Critics saw the timing of the rally, which coincided with the 30th anniversary of a raid by federal agents on the Branch Davidians religious sect in Waco, as a nod to Trump's far-right supporters. The Trump campaign spokesperson said Waco was chosen as the location for the rally because it is situated between several major population centers and has the infrastructure to host a large event.

Trump's effort to lock in the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential race faces a potential challenge from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis amid signs of softening support for Trump in some areas. Trump accused DeSantis of plotting to slash social security, saying he was not a big fan of the governor.

The rally highlights the ongoing political polarization in the US and the continued support for Trump among his base. The international community must work towards promoting greater unity and respect for democratic processes to prevent the escalation of political tensions and violence.
