Perpetrators Of Attack On Journalists In Afghanistan Should Be Punished: Intl Organizations

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) Committee to Protect Journalists and Journalists Without Borders asked the Taliban authorities to identify and punish the perpetrators of the attack on Journalists at the Tabeyan Culture Center in northern Mazar-e-Sharif province.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has described the incident as“a reminder of a painful situation” that targeted journalists. The committee has called on Taliban officials to take extra security measures and provide a safe environment for journalists.

The explosion occurred four days ago at the Tebyan Cultural Center during a journalists' gathering for the award event in Balkh province; at least three people were killed, and 30 others, including 16 journalists, were wounded. ISIL claimed the responsibility for the attack, which resulted in the death and injury of scores of journalists.

“It is extremely shocking to see that journalists are targeted simply for being a journalist. We are demanding the governor of Balkh province to identify the perpetrators of the horrific attack at the soonest,” the statement Journalists without borders said.

Furthermore, the Committee to Protect Journalists said in its statement,“the late brutal attack in a press event at Balkh province is a reminder of a painful situation, which has led to a drastic decline in press freedom since the return of Taliban to power in August 2021. Taliban should do everything possible to protect journalists, and let them freely operate in the country.”

This comes as Nai, supporting open media in Afghanistan on Saturday said after the attack on Tebyan Cultural Center, the Taliban officials took some journalists with them for investigation.

Seerat Noori, a journalist at Pajhwok Afghan News Agency who was injured at the incident, said he was mistreated by the Taliban personnel. He wrote on his Facebook that a Taliban soldier entered the room he was getting treatment and said,“I wish they were all dead.”
