Doha: A San Francisco school district recently reversed its decision to recognize Eid as a school holiday. The decision is a withdrawal of the August 2022 vote in favor of recognizing both Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha as official school holidays.

According to Middle East Eye, the San Francisco Unified School District issued“a number of recommendations for adding new holidays to the school calendar, including recognizing certain religious holidays without formally labelling them as holidays.”

The decision was reportedly reversed after the school district was threatened with a lawsuit that called the decision“a violation of the constitution for prioritizing one religion over the others.”

Several school districts across the US have reportedly issued a number of similar recommendations to recognize Eid and other certain religious holidays without any pushback.

Local Muslim and Arab groups, a local teachers' union, and other groups are leading efforts to help make both Eid holidays officially recognized by the school district again.

Lara Kiswani, an organizer at a local Arab resources center and part of the aforementioned efforts, said that they had until March for the city to actually approve and finalise the upcoming school year's calendar, which is when Eid 'was supposed to be implemented and recognised as a holiday.'
