Prices for firewood, wood pellets in Germany spiral by 85.7 percent

(MENAFN) Based on the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), costs for firewood and wood pellets in Germany skyrocketed 85.7 percent in August compared to the same month last year.

According to the data, the cost of firewood increased far more quickly than the 7.9 percent increase in total consumer costs during the same time period.

The statistics department clarified, “reasons for the above-average price rise for firewood and wood pellets are an increase in demand, as well as higher purchase prices and transport costs in the wood industry.” Additionally, it mentioned how more Germans were using firewood as a substitute for heating their houses as a result of rising energy costs.

Due to the interruption of Russian natural gas supply, Germany, the largest economy in the European Union, has been struggling with an energy crisis. Berlin unveiled a range of measures last month intended to cut gas usage over the approaching heating season. The measures include decreasing the heating temperature in offices and public buildings from 20 to 19 degrees Celsius, with the exception of social institutions like hospitals. Businesses, including well-known stores, have already started to consume less energy.
