(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) GENEVA, Sept 23 (KUNA) -- The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cautioned Friday against increasing numbers of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Sudan amid high living conditions.
In a statement, the UNHCR said Sudan is one of the largest refugee and IDPs populations in Africa as it hosts about 1.1 million refugees and 3.7 million IDPs mainly in Darfur and Kordofan.
These conditions come amid consecutive repercussions of the war in Ukraine and the continued impact of the Covid-19 as well as tough weather due to climate crisis, it noted.
The UNHCR has received so far only one third of the required financial needs worth USD 348 million until the end of 2022 to provide a rapid response, according to the statement.
Inflation rate is higher than the levels before the pandemic and this leads to a dramatic rise in foodstuffs prices and a shortage of basic commodities, it pointed out.
All these conditions put pressures on the host societies and affect indirectly the IDPs mainly those who do not have any financial support.
Meanwhile, restrictions imposed on the imports mean that current projects planned to back integrating refugees into society will be halted, it pointed out, referring to other repercussions and problems due to the limits. (end)
