Hurricane Fiona reaches Dominican Republic

(MENAFN) Hurricane Fiona neared the Dominican Republic Monday after knocking out the power network and releasing floods and landslides in Puerto Rico, where the director stated the damage was “catastrophic.”

No demises have been recorded, but experts in the U.S. area declared it was too early to predict the damage from a hurricane that was still predicted to unleash heavy rain across Puerto Rico on Monday.

Up to 30 inches (76 centimeters) was prediction for Puerto Rico's southern area.

“It’s important people understand that this is not over,” on the words of Ernesto Morales, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in San Juan.

He added flooding went to “historic levels,” with experts evacuating or saving hundreds of people in the island.

“The damages that we are seeing are catastrophic,” according to Gov. Pedro Pierluisi.
