KABUL (Pajhwok): Some social media activists claim probiotics can play a vital role in the treatment of Covid-19. But medical experts, rejecting the claim, warn the excessive use of probiotics may lead to harmful effects.
Iran's Mehr News Agency published on its website a report , saying fresh research showed probiotics played a vital role in eradicating Covid-19 by strengthening the immune system and help Covid-19 patients recover swiftly.
The article added:“Research findings show that probiotics can play a significant role in fighting Covid-19. Therefore, it can be used as a supplement along with the treatment protocols of Covid-19.”
Another website, Mujala Salamat Kiwan, reported:“You've probably heard of probiotics, the“good bacteria” that can benefit our health. We consume them in many ways, such as foods marketed as healthy.”
It added :“These bacteria can be consumed in supplement capsules, yogurt, drinks, or even as a snack help fight Covid-19.”
Medical Experts:
According to health experts, probiotics could strengthen the human immune system, but its continued use could cause a negative impact on the body.
Dr. Faridullah Umari, trainer and specialist at Antani Hospital, said:“Probiotics are not a special treatment for corona patients, they only play a role in raising the body's immune system. It is recommended, when necessary. This drug should not be used all the time, because it causes side-effects.”
He said:“Probiotics are not antibiotics, nor do they have any special effects on the treatment of corona patients, nor do they have an effect on other viruses. The use of probiotics in corona patients boosts the immune system and body resistance against infections, Covid-19 and cholera.”
Dr. Hashmatullah Faizi, a trainer and doctor at the Afghan-Japan Hospital, said probiotics were not recommended for corona patients. This medicine is only given to patients who have diarrhea and digestive problems.
Dr. Mohammad Basir Khyber, internal disease specialist at the Mazar-i-Sharif Covid-19 Hospital, said probiotics played a significant role in raising the strengthening the immune system, especially in HIV, hepatitis C, hepatitis B, diabetes patients.
He said recent research conducted by WHO showed probiotics had no role in the treatment of Covid-19.
