Brasília – Aiming at encouraging the activities of the so-called digital nomads in Brazil, the National Immigration Council, affiliated with the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, has regulated the granting of temporary visas and resident permits for immigrants that, without employment bonds in the country and by using information technologies, provide services for employers overseas.
The digital nomad is an individual that uses technology to remotely carry out the tasks of their profession and does not depend on a fixed base to work from. The measure that regulated the presence of this worker in Brazil was published on Monday (24) in the Federal Gazette and establishes an initial period of one year of residence that can be renewed for an equal period.
National Security secretary José Vicente Santini said the regulation follows a worldwide trend and even contributes to the tourism industry.“The remuneration of digital nomads come from foreign sources, and the resources brought by these immigrants move the local economy. This is a major step for Brazil to promote a more modern work model,” he said.
How to get it
The temporary visa must be requested at any Brazilian consular office abroad by submitting the documents provided for in the resolution such as a health insurance valid throughout the country and proof of digital nomad status.
The immigrant that is within the national territory must submit the application for residence to the Ministry of Justice via the MigranteWeb system.
In both cases, the proof of digital nomad status must be made by submitting the employment or service delivery contract as well as other documents showing a bond with the foreign employer. Furthermore, it is necessary to prove means of support in Brazil.
