BEIRUT, Jan 17 (NNN-NNA) – The number of people infected with COVID-19 in Lebanon has reached 820,170, according to the country's Health Ministry, which reported 5,539 new COVID-19 infections yesterday.

In Lebanon, the number of persons who have died from the virus has risen by 16 to 9,383, as of yesterday, the ministry said.

Due to the entrance of a large number of expats throughout the festive season of Christmas and New Year, Lebanon has experienced a sharp increase in the number of daily infections, over the previous two weeks.

The Health Ministry has responded by ramping up its vaccination programme, in the hope of achieving herd immunity in the coming months, despite the fact that, only half of the population has received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.– NNN-NNA
