France ignores US-led Boycott of Beijing Winter Olympics

(MENAFN) On Thursday, Dec. 9 France’s Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer stated that France does not aim at joining the boycott against Beijing Winter Olympics, which the United States initiated.

The minister informed the BFM TV: “With regard to China, we condemned the persecution of minorities such as the Uyghurs, human rights violations, we expressed concern about the Chinese tennis player … Here our position is clear. But boycotting the Olympics is a completely different story. Sports should not be confused with politics. Therefore, France is not going to join it.”

On the same day, France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian announced, the issuance of the boycott against 2022 Beijing’s Winter Olympic Games is intended for Eurozone countries.

Le Drian said during a media briefing with Annalena Baerbock the German counterpart, “As for the diplomatic boycott, this issue will be settled at the European level.”
