(MENAFN) In a meeting with the Russian news source RBC, the Governor of the Sakhalin region, Valery Limarenko, indicated that the Danish company Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners plans to lease a whole Russian island, Shumshu, which is included within the northern Kuril Islands, in order to construct a renewable energy power plant to create "green" hydrogen.

Limarenko clarified that Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners is concentrating on ecofriendly renewable energy investments and hopes to produce 1.5 GW of power and 120,000 tons of hydrogen on Shumshu utilizing energy from the wind. The proposal is expected to cost between USD2-2.5 billion.
