Nine young Jordanians awarded by HRH The Prince of Wales as winners of the British Council UK-Jordan Centenary Climate Change Competition for Young Learners and Young Adults 2021


(MENAFN- British Council) Jordan, 20 November 2021 – An event was held at the British Ambassador’s residence in Amman to celebrate the winners of the UK-Jordan Centenary Climate Change Competition 2021. Bridget Brind, British Ambassador to Jordan and Summer Xia, Director of the British Council in Jordan, hosted the event and in the honoured presence of HRH The Prince of Wales.

The British Council and British Embassy launched last September their UK-Jordan Centenary Climate Competition for Young Learners and Young Adults with the theme ‘Climate change – Jordan and the next one hundred years.’

The competition was designed to celebrate 100 years of friendship between Jordan and the UK, and to encourage young people in Jordan to use their creativity to raise awareness and promote action on climate change and the challenges it presents in Jordan now and in the future.

Summer Xia, British Council Director said: ‘This is part of the British Council’s Global Climate Connection Campaign to bring people around the world together to meet the challenges of climate change, through arts and culture, education and the English language. It is about ideas, innovation and real change. We are excited to have received so many inspiring and innovative ideas, represented by the nine outstanding winners.’

The competition was open to children (6-12 and 13-17 years old) and young adults from 18-30 years of age. A judging panel including the British Ambassador Bridget Brind, the British Council Director Summer Xia and the Found of ArtmeJo Hind Joucka chose the winners, and each of them will receive a prize, and their work will be displayed at the British Council on Rainbow Street. The top two winners (18-30 years of age) will enjoy full accommodation for one night with a family member at Feynan Eco-lodge sponsored by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN). The British Council will also offer free courses to the third place winners aged 14 and older. The ten best runners up in each age group will also receive a certificate of excellence.

The top three winners are:
● Layan AlZawahrah for 6-12 year old category
● William Shahwan for 13-17 year old category
● Juhaina Rawahneh for 18-30 year old category

Khaled Anis Irani ,Chairman of Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) commented Youth participation in environmental protection is one of the most important programs that will aid the planet's recovery. We know that when young people participate, we have created ambassadors who will spread the message and find solutions, the most pressing of which is climate change, with biodiversity conservation as one of the main axes in this issue.
