Hate speech violates human dignity: Minister

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Qatar underlined that hate speech violates human dignity and contributes to creating a climate of violence, noting that the frequent use of information technology has exacerbated this situation. This came in a speech for HE the Minister of Education and Higher Education Buthaina bint Ali al-Jabar al-Nuaimi, delivered on her behalf by HE Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) Dr Nasser bin Hamad al-Hanzab, during the participation of Qatar in the Global Education Ministers conference on addressing hate speech through education, which was held via videoconference.
In her speech, HE the Minister of Education and Higher Education stressed Qatar's keenness on spreading the concepts of tolerance, dialogue and respect for opinion and the other opinion in its educational policies and academic frameworks, with the aim of not discriminating between learners of different races, races and genders.
She called on the international community to encourage more research, studies and technological innovations on the relationship between the use of modern technology, the Internet and social media, and to take into account these elements when formulating educational policies, stressing their importance in promoting a discourse of tolerance and acceptance of the other.
HE al-Nuaimi also stressed the need for Unesco to involve the private sector and social media companies to contribute to strengthening the support for the United Nations' principles aimed at confronting and combating hate speech, through dissemination of messages promoting the values of tolerance, renunciation of violence, openness, peace and respect for human rights.
She noted that spreading a culture of hatred and excluding the other is inconsistent with international conventions and norms related to human rights, and also contradicts the messages of peace of the religions that call for amity and understanding between human beings.
