Bachelet raises a number of concerns on Sri Lanka


(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet today raised a number of concerns on Sri Lanka, including on the recent State of Emergency, in an oral update to the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva.

Some of the concerns raised by Bachelet included the release of former MP Duminda Silva, the decision to drop the charges against former Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda, and the continued detention of Hejaaz Hizbullah.

Bachelet also called for a timeline by when Sri Lanka hopes to repeal the Prevention of terrorism Act.

President of the Human Rights Council, Ambassador Nazhat Shameem Khan of Fiji, opened the 48th session of the UNHRC today.

Bachelet later presented an oral update on Sri Lanka, where she noted concerns over the failure to ensure adequate progress on the human rights issue.

Additionally, a number of countries are also expected to echo her concerns on Sri Lanka during the general debate tomorrow (Tuesday). (Colombo Gazette)
