Multiple websites in Sri Lanka came under a cyber attack today.

The websites have been hacked by a group claiming to be the Tamil Eelam Cyber Force.

The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) told Colombo Gazette the cyber attack was launched targeting three websites today.

The SLCERT said the websites of the Health Ministry, Sri Lanka Embassy in China and the Rajarata University were defaced as a result.

Images containing the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) flag, a post with the text ''Tamil Eelam Cyber Force Operation Mullivaikkal'' and other images with details of the Mullivaikkal massacre during Sri Lanka's Civil war have been placed on the websites.

The SLCERT said all of the affected websites have been restored, while measures are being taken to ensure no further damage is caused.

It further said such attacks done to deface websites are carried out by activists who require a platform for their personal views to be shared with a mass audience.

The cyber attack coincides with the commemoration of the Mullivaikkal massacre which is marked on the 18th of May. (Colombo Gazette)
