Spain FM to visit Kuwait, Iraq amid Gulf Arab tour

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MADRID, April 9 (KUNA) -- Spain said its Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya will start a two-day visit to Kuwait on Saturday, before heading to its larger neighbor Iraq as part of a wider tour of the Gulf Arab region.
The tour, which previously took the Spanish top diplomat to Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar, aims to "strengthen" Madrid's relations with Gulf Arab states, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
In the first visit by a Spanish foreign minister to Kuwait in many years, the talks on April 10-11 will run the gamut from economic and political cooperation to bilateral trade ties, in addition to current happenings around the region, added the statement.
From there, the Spanish foreign minister will travel to neighboring Iraq for talks with the political leadership there, aiming to push economic and trade relations towards more progress, it added.
She is also scheduled to visit Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region for similar talks with President Nechirvan Barzani, discussing reconstruction efforts in the capital Erbil and the overall humanitarian situation in the northern city, it said. (end)
