Qatar, Poland envoys to lead negotiations on UNSC reform


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) President of the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Volkan Bozkir, has appointed Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, H E Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed Saif Al Thani and Permanent Representative of Poland, H E Ambassador Joanna Wronecka, to lead and facilitate negotiations on Security Council reform, in accordance with General Assembly resolutions calling for reform of the Council in terms of equitable representation and increasing the number of its members and other issues related to Security Council reform. Bozkir said, in a letter to all UN member states, that the General Assembly decided to continue the intergovernmental negotiations on Security Council reform at an informal session of the General Assembly during its 75th session. He added that this early appointment should provide an opportunity for member states to start consultations on issues related to Security Council reform at an appropriate time. Appointing Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed Saif Al Thani to this task comes in recognition of the role of the State of Qatar in the United Nations, its belief in the principle of multilateralism and its keenness to develop the mechanisms of work of the international organisation to achieve its goals, including reforming the work of the Security Council.
