S. hit by 6-magnitude earthquake


(MENAFN) The Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology (Phivolcs) said in a statement that the southern Surigao Del Sur province in the Philippines was hit by a 6.0-magnitude earthquake on Monday.

The agency said the offshore tremor, which hit at 6:37 a.m. local time, struck at a depth of 33 km, 29 km southeast of the town of San Agustin, Surigao Del Sur.

Aftershocks are expected to be triggered and to cause various damages as the quake which was tectonic in origin has not ended yet.

The Philippines has regular seismic movement owing to its site along the Pacific "Ring of Fire."
