Doha: Galfar Al Misnad concluded their annual environment awareness campaign with a tree planting ceremony at the Doha South Sewage Treatment Plant (DSSTP) in Mesaimeer recently.
The leading Qatari construction firm was associated with the DSSTP expansion project. Galfar employees joined representatives from Ashghal to plant trees on the verdant grounds, including a banyan tree, neem tree, tropical almond tree, and mulberry tree.
Such environmentally friendly initiatives are regularly carried out by Galfar Al Misnad, in line with their staunch commitment to espousing sustainable practices in all activities, said a statement.
The tree planting ceremony at Ashghal's plant has been conducted continuously for eight years by Galfar, and has become a tradition on these grounds.
Saplings that were planted in the years past are now big trees that provide much needed shade in the area and their lush foliage provide an essential green lung right in the middle of the city.
Under the leadership of the Galfar QHSE team, a tree planting session was also held on the grounds of a local school, where the students participated with full enthusiasm despite the heat of the day. As part of the interaction, Galfar conducted an elocution competition at the school to raise awareness on 'Beat Air Pollution, the UNEP designated theme for World Environment Day this year.
Ten primary students talked on the perils of air pollution, its ramifications, and the possible solutions, in front of their colleagues. A group of children also educated their peers through a special dance performance on the environment. Every year, starting from World Environment Day on June 5, the QHSE team of Galfar Al Misnad conducts a month-long Environment Awareness Campaign across its offices, sites, and in the local community.
Activities include tree planting drives, awareness sessions on ecologically sustainable practices at work and at home, and educational outreaches in the local community. This year, the company is holding a drawing competition on the topic of Environment for its workers, to increase their awareness of environment protection.
The company also makes it a point to involve its own extended family in the campaign. This year, more than 60 children of Galfar Al Misnad staff were taken on a special tour of the Kahraamaa Awareness Park, where they took an educational and enthralling journey through the interactive park.
