DUBAI, 17th April, 2019 (WAM) -- The Emirates Urological Society, EUS, has announced the launch of its year-long prostate cancer screening campaign, targeting individuals aged between 50 and 69 years.

At a press conference on Tuesday, the EUS said the campaign would be segmented into two areas, research and awareness, focusing on a random sampling range of 1,500 to 2,000 medical cases.

The campaign's core objective, the urological society explained, is to raise awareness about prostate cancer, and the importance of early detection.

According to the World Cancer Research Fund, prostate cancer is the second most common occurring cancer in men, registering 1.3 million new cases of prostate cancer in 2018 globally.

Statistics show the importance of early detection. The American Society of Clinical Oncology, ASCO, noted that early detection can lead to nearly 100 percent in a 5-year survival rate. If the prostate cancer has spread to other parts of the body, then the five-year survival rate drops to 30 percent.

Dr. Abdul Qader Al Zarouni, President of the EUS, and Urologist at Khalifa General Hospital in Umm Al Qaiwain, said, "The disease is a silent killer, but detection in the early stages leads to a high rate of success and recovery, close to 100 percent," noting that while the disease mainly effects men, its impact is felt by the whole family and society in general.

He added that the research component will see the campaign team receive random samples of blood tests, with a focus on obtaining preliminary results. Following data analysis, he explained that the EUS will make recommendations to official authorities to further develop healthcare strategies.
