Shanghai, April.16 (Petra) - Former Lebanese President Michel Suleiman stressed the importance of the Hashemite role and the Hashemite custodianship in preserving Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

"We appreciate and support the Hashemite role," he told reporters on the sidelines of the China-Arab States Forum on Reform and Development held in Shanghai.

"We must inform the world that the Palestine issue is central and Arabs should not leave this issue in the hands of others," he said.

"The injustice inflicted on the Palestinian citizens in the region is the source of all terrorist movements and related extremism and others, so the Palestinians must be treated fairly," Suleiman added.

President Michel Sleiman assumed the Lebanese presidency from 25 May 2008 until 24 May 2014. Prior to that, he led the Lebanese army from 1998 until 2008.
