Washington, Feb. 17 (Petra) -- US Vice President Mike Pence warned Turkey of purchasing Russia's S-400 missile defense system, in a statement posted on the White House official website Saturday evening.

Pence, speaking at the Munich Security Conference, told attendees "we will not stand idly by while NATO allies purchase weapons from our adversaries."

The statement came a few days after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country will proceed with plans to purchase an advanced air-defense system from Russia.

The decision to obtain the weapon concerned NATO allies because of its incompatibility with NATO defense systems.

Previously, a spokesperson of the U.S. State Department said that if Turkey proceeds with the S-400 purchase, it would jeopardize its purchase of F-35 fighter jets and possibly result in the United States imposing sanctions.
