Qatar footballer shuts down trolls with epic reply

Doha: Qatar footballer Bassam Al Rawi has shutdown trolls with an epic reply. He was trolled by some Arab fans after scoring the only goal during the match against Iraq in the Asian Cup 2019, which took the Al Annabi to the quarter-final.

Many Iraqi and Arab fans launched a vitriolic attack on the player, pointing his Iraqi origin, on social media.

In a tweet on his official Twitter handle, Al Rawi gave an apt and detailed reply shutting down the trolls.

The tweet with the reply has gone viral and has been retweeted and liked by thousands.

"Yesterday I played the most important game in my career and I scored the most valuable goal since I started playing football.
"I was born in Iraq and come from an Iraqi family and I am proud of my origins.

He thanked Qatar for supporting his football career and developing his talent.

"I started playing football in Qatar and completed my studies at Qatar Schools and then went to Aspire Academy. Through Al Rayyan club I trained at the Spanish club Celta Vigo. Aspire developed my football talent and I ended up at Al-Duhail Club.

Expressing his love for Qatar, he said: "Qatar has done a great favour and I will never forget that."

As for his celebration after the goal, Al Rawi said: "After scoring the most important goal of my career, it is my right to celebrate, and the right of my teammates and the people of Qatar to celebrate, with all love and appreciation to the Iraqi public.

"I am proud of my Iraqi roots and I am very proud of belonging to Qatar and representing its beloved team, he concluded.

Al Rawi produced the match-winner in the 62nd minute with a free kick that dipped in ate to beat goalkeeper Jalal Hassan Hachem as Qatar stunned the 2007 champions 1-0 at Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

It was the fourth successive win for Qatar, coached by Felix Sanchez.

Qatar, who topped Group E, beat Lebanon, North Korea and Saudi Arabia before edging past a determined Iraq yesterday.

In the quarter-final on Friday, Qatar will take on Korea who yesterday beat Bahrain in the round of 16.
