UN envoy pays unplanned visit to Yemen

(MENAFN) Yemeni security officials affirm U.N. envoy Martin Griffiths has arrived in the capital, Sanaa, on an unexpected visit to debate the "complex situation" in and around the coastal city of Hodeida, where Yemen's warring parties agreed to a cease-fire last month and decided on a prisoner swap that has yet to occur.

Also under talk from Monday will be arguments between Yemen's Houthi insurgents, who hold Hodeida, and Retired Dutch Maj. Gen. Patrick Cammaert, who is heading a U.N. mission charged with observing the cease-fire.

The struggle in Yemen began with the 2014 take control of Sanaa by the Iran-aligned insurgents. A Saudi-led coalition allied with the internationally recognized government has been combat the Houthis since 2015.

The officials spoke namelessly as they weren't ratified to give information journalists.
