Qatar to provide $20mn aid to reintegrate African migrants


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Qatar and the African Union (AU) Commission have affirmed joint efforts to reintegrate irregular migrants into their communities. In a joint statement, the two sides announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to provide a US$20mn grant being Qatar's support for reintegrating vulnerable migrants into their communities.
HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani and Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki witnessed the signing of the MoU.
The MoU aims to strengthen regional co-operation and partnership by addressing the irregular migration phenomena in the Sahel Region. Qatar and the African Union Commission have established this grant to support the safe evacuation and reintegration of these migrants in their countries of origin.
Through the Qatar Development Fund, the two sides also aim to partner with financial institutions in target countries to design and implement specifically designed programs to support the economic reintegration of returnees.
