Qatar British Festival ends on a high note

Doha: The fifth annual Qatar British Festival concluded on Wednesday at Mondrian Doha with the British Landscapes Concert featuring celebrated UK Prize winner violinist Savitri Grier.

More than 450 people watched Grier perform with Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra musicians pieces by contemporary and classical British composers such as Edward Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Rebecca Clarke giving the crowd an idea of the UK music scene.

Over the last year Grier has returned to Wigmore Hall both as a soloist, and with the IMS Prussia Cove Ensemble. She toured throughout China and collaborated with the renowned sarod players Amaan Ali and Ayaan Ali Bangash at The Times Swarsangam Music Festival in Bangalore. Next year, Savitri will undertake a complete Beethoven Sonata series in Scotland as part of a Tunnell Trust award with pianist Richard Uttley.

Recent solo highlights include the Royal Philharmonic, Bournemouth Symphony, English Chamber, London Mozart Players, Welsh National Opera, Barbican Young and Oxford Philharmonic Orchestras. In 2016, she made her debut at Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall.

The concert was organised in partnership with the Chamber Music Society of Qatar and International Chamber Music Concert Series for Peace and Unity - both initiated by the founder and artistic director, renowned pianist Sonja Park who also performed in the well-received show.

Alongside the performance, Savitri delivered a masterclass at Qatar Music Academy where 50 audiences gained knowledge benefited from Savitri's experience.

The festival, which lasted for three weeks, featured a variety of events for the entire family, including public art, films, musical performances, panel discussions, and sports festival.

Showcasing the best of British culture, the Festival, which ran from November 27 to December 12 was organised by the British Council in partnership with the British Embassy with Katara Cultural Village as the Strategic Cultural Partner, Qatar National Library as Strategic Community Partner and Souq Waqif as Strategic Tourism Partner.
