France calls for prudence, restraint after tunnel discovery in Lebanon

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) PARIS, Dec 12 (KUNA) -- French authorities on Wednesday called for "prudence and restraint by all parties" in Lebanon after the discovery of tunnels allegedly build by militant group Hezbollah on the border with Israel.

Israel forces have been active in the border region in recent weeks and have declared that the Hezbollah group built the tunnels in order to attack Israeli towns on the other side of the Lebanese border and accused Hezbollah of violating Israeli territory.

"France expresses concern after the discovery by the Israeli armed forces of tunnels on Israeli territory, built by Hezbollah from the Lebanese side," a Foreign Ministry statement said here.

"These tunnels are a violation of United Nations security council 1701 which set out a halt in hostilities along the 'Blue Line' between Lebanon and Israel," it added.

The statement said that Paris had made its concern known to the Lebanese authorities and was continuing close dialogue with Beirut over the situation in South Lebanon where France also has 700 troops deployed with the UNIFIL force.

The Foreign Ministry statement also urged full respect for Resolution 1701 which has allowed for a relative peace on the border with Israel for a number of years. (end) jk.sd
