Doha: Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) marked yesterday the International Volunteer Day (IVD) at a ceremony held at the Sharq Village & Spa Doha.

IVD is observed annually on December 5 by the United Nations and 190 National Societies worldwide.

Over the past week, several events were organised by QRCS's volunteers, including a workshop on building a flexible society, a lecture on volunteerism by Dr. Ayoub Al Ayoub, and public visits by QRCS's Volunteers Bus, which toured diverse locations across the country.

During the ceremony, Noura Rashid Al Dosari, General Director of Volunteering and Local Development, QRCS, said, ' IVD is an opportunity to say thank you to our volunteers, who dedicate their time and effort to the welfare of others.

She said that as a volunteering-oriented organisation, QRCS cherishes its volunteers as an invaluable asset that it seeks to maintain and develop, maximise their productivity, unleash their potential, recruit promising youths in different fields.

'Humanitarian action is too huge to be undertaken effectively by one single organization or country. It requires concerted efforts and integrated resources of everyone who can contribute. We boast our 2,700 volunteers, who have made notable achievements both in Qatar and abroad. Our biggest belief is that nations are built by the hands of their human wealth, and even the slightest aid can save a life, she added.

Hassan Al Abbasi, representative of volunteers, said, 'Contributing your time, effort, or thoughts to helping others in return for nothing is the noblest thing ever. This way, we volunteers are the best of people, by serving our society for years. We are committed to volunteerism and benevolence, inspired by a strong sense of responsibility.

Dr. Jawhara Al Qahtani, a resident doctor at Hamad General Hospital who volunteers with QRCS's foreign medical convoys, revealed a plan to launch four medical convoys to Bangladesh, Gaza, Somalia, and Sudan, respectively, during the celebrations of Qatar's National Day 2018.

The convoys, she explained, would vary in specialty from general to pediatric surgery, from urology to anesthetics, and from cardiac to eye surgery.

The ceremony concluded with the honouring of many supporting institutions, companies, youth groups, social media celebrities, volunteering physicians, young and adult volunteers, and the Happiness Fund initiative.
