Amman, Dec. 9 (Petra) -- Acting Director-General of the Department of Palestinian Affairs, Samer Khasawneh, Sunday stressed that Jordan keeps putting diplomatic and legal pressure, and enhance the foreign policy, supported by his Majesty King Abdullah II, to support the Palestinian cause.

Khasawneh said in his opening speech of the Conference of supervisors on Palestinian affairs in Cairo that Jordan, under the leadership of his Majesty, stresses the invariable stance of the kingdom towards the Palestinian people, land, and holy places. It looks at the Palestinian issue as its number one cause and will always support the Palestinians in their fair struggle to realize their national rights.

He added that the kingdom reemphasizes that the Jordanian guardianship over the Islamic and Christian holy places in Jerusalem is a historic responsibility, which Jordan takes pride in. And in cooperation with the brothers in Palestine, we will stay committed to our religious and historic obligations to protect and rebuild the holy places, and strive to uphold Jeruslemites and stand firm against any attempt to alter the identity of the holy city.

Khasawneh underscored Jordan's stance in supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which safeguards the inalienable rights of the Palestinian refugees. He pointed out to the importance of the agency's work on behalf of the international community.

He relayed Jordan's firm rejection to cutting back on the support allocated for the UNRWA and its utter rejection of seizing or reducing its services or designating another body to carry out its services in its stead. He called upon states to continue supporting it and stay committed towards the agency so that it could continue providing its work and carry out its duties and services to the Palestinian refugees. UNRWA represents the international community's commitment towards the Palestinian cause.

The conference was held in the headquarters of the Arab League with the participation of officials from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization, Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Islamic Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization.
