DOHA: Experienced German rider Christian Ahlmann yesterday guided Caribis Z to a spectacular win in the feature event on day two of the final round of the Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT).
Eleven-year-old Caribis Z clocked a time of 45.06 seconds in the jump-off as Ahlmann, 43, completed a convincing win in the €145,000 competition at Al Shaqab Arena.
Harrie Smolders, astride 14-year-old Emerald, finished in second spot in a time of 45.61 seconds. Smolders won €29,000.
Ireland's Shane Sweetnam also made it to the podium by guiding Main Road to a third-place finish in a time of 45.80 seconds. Sweetnam won €21,700.
Belgian duo Karel Cox (Dublin van Overis, 45.81 seconds) and Pieter Devos (Claire Z, 45.82 seconds) completed the top five in the 1.55m competition. Cox won €14,500 while Devos got richer by €8,700.
A total of 40 entries featured in the jump-off.
'I feel we did really well, Ahlmann, who won €47,850, said yesterday.
'I think this puts in a good place for the Grand Prix, Ahlmann, a fan of racing star Michael Schumacher, added.
Today the action at Al Shaqab Arena will kick off with two Hathab Series competitions starting at 9:00am and 12:00pm respectively.
A total of 55 entries will feature in the day's first event while 20 horses take part in the second contest.
The Second Global Champions League (GCL) competition - a team event - will start at 2:30pm while the day's feature event - the LGCT Grand Prix - will commence at 5:45pm.
The total prize money on offer in the Grand Prix is €375,000 whereas the prize bag in the team contest is €95,000. Qatar's Bassem Mohammed won Grand Prix last year.
A total of 53 entries will feature in the GCL team competition whereas 35 horses will compete for top honours in the Grand Prix.
The conclusion of the Grand Prix will signal the end of the regular LGCT season.
